Abstract:
This dataset contains a near-infrared radiation (NIR) orthomosaic from Modular Aerial Camera System (MACS) images acquired over Atka Bays landfast sea ice during the Antarctic season of 2022/23 (date of aquisition: December 5th, 2022). The data set covers significant parts of Atka Bay focusing on areas where icebergs were embedded in the landfast sea ice. The scientific focus was to investigate the influence of icebergs on wind-driven snow distribution and slush formation on Antarctic landfast sea ice. The data are available as Geotiff files and have the following coordinate system: EPSG:3031 - WGS 84 / Antarctic Polar Stereographic.

Comment:
We generated an orthomosaic from 11473 single images capturing near-infrared (NIR) radiation with the Modular Airborne Camera System (MACS). We used a NIR camera which captures light within the 715 – 950 nm wavelength range (Rettelbach et al., 2024; doi:10.5194/essd-16-5767-2024). Data were acquired at a shutter speed of 0.1 ms to avoid image over saturation due to bright snow surfaces. All images were corrected for vignetting effects by employing a parametric vignetting model (Rohlfing, 2012; doi:10.6084/m9.figshare.96145.v2) and converted from MACS raw data format into lossless PNG images. The external camera orientation was obtained from the camera inertial measurement unit (IMU) and the GNSS solutions used for the ALS processing. The final orthomosaic was obtained by employing the full structure from motion pipeline of Agisoft Metashape (Neckel et al., 2023; doi:10.1038/s41597-023-02318-5).
