Abstract:
The Neodymium (Nd) isotopic signature (εNd) has been widely used as a proxy to reconstruct past ocean circulation. Recently it has been increasingly questioned which archives can be reliably used to extract authigenic εNd used for the reconstruction of past ocean circulation and under which environmental conditions bottom seawater εNd are altered and the original water mass signature is overprinted. This dataset contains Nd isotope compositions of authigenic and detrital sedimentary phases from the abyssal Atlantic Ocean, focusing on the behavior of the Nd isotope composition in oxic deep-sea sediments during early diagenesis.
Samples were collected during cruise MSM96 in 2020 using multicorers. Authigenic phases were extracted through a 10s leaching procedure using 0.005 M hydroxylammonium hydrochloride, 1.5% acetic acid, and 0.03 M Na-EDTA buffered to ca. pH 4 with NaOH solution (Huang et al., 2021). For selected samples, data is also provided for a "strong" leach using 0.05 M hydroxylammonium hydrochloride, 15% acetic acid and 0.03 M Na-EDTA buffered to ca. pH 4 with NaOH, that followed after a decarbonation step. The leftover detrital sediment fraction was processed using alkaline fusion. Neodymium was purified using first BIORAD AG50W-X12 resin, followed by Eichchrom Ln-spec resin.
