Abstract:
We performed laboratory friction experiments on a fault zone sample from the frontal thrust region of the Nankai Trough, Japan. The sample is from borehole C0007D, drilled during the Nankai Trough Seismogenic Zone Experiment (NanTroSEIZE) Expedition 316. The experiments were performed on powdered gouge, water saturated, under effective normal stresses ranging from 3 to 13.5 MPa. Under driving velocities of 0.1 to 100 microns/second, we measured the rate- and state-dependent frictional behavior, with the results being relevant for slow slip events observed locally.
