Abstract:
This dataset presents a high-resolution multi-proxy analyses and includes sedimentary census counts and opal content, foraminiferal stable oxygen isotope and trace element ratios, and the neodymium (Nd) isotope composition of fish debris and mixed planktic foraminifera from sediment samples of International Ocean Discovery Program Site U1540 (55° 8.47ʹ S, 114° 50.52ʹ W, 3580 m), located in the central South Pacific Ocean. The high-resolution analyses cover the timespan between Marine Isotope Stage 12 and 10. Sedimentary census counts include abundance estimates of the planktic foraminifer Neogloboquadrina pachyderma and ice rafted debris (IRD). Summer sea surface temperatures were calculated from the relative abundance of N. pachyderma using the calibration by Govin et al. (2009). The sedimentary opal content was obtained from discrete opal measurements on the bulk sediment. Stable oxygen isotope (δ¹⁸O) analyses were conducted on the epibenthic foraminifera Cibicidoides wuellerstorfi and Cibicides kullenbergi. The benthic foraminiferal δ¹⁸O data were used to generate the age model of the study core by manually tuning the record to the benthic foraminiferal LR04 δ¹⁸O stack of Lisiecki and Raymo (2005). Trace element ratios, including Mg/Ca, Mn/Ca, Al/Ca, Fe/Ca, U/Ca and U/Mn, were measured on the benthic foraminifer Uvigerina spp. and the planktic foraminifer Globigerina bulloides. Bottom water temperatures at the study site were calculated from benthic foraminifera Mg/Ca ratios using the calibration of Elderfield et al. (2010). The Nd isotope composition from fossil fish debris and mixed planktic foraminifera allowed an assessment of water mass provenance changes at the study site. This dataset provides insights into sub-millennial dynamics in bottom water oxygenation and -temperatures as well as water mass mixing in the central deep South Pacific Ocean during the climatic optimum of Marine Isotope Stage 11 (~424-395 kyr before present) and glacial periods before and after.
