Abstract:
Surface current drifters were deployed along the equator in the Atlantic Ocean from the RV Meteor during the cruise M158, which took place between September 19 and October 26, 2019. In total, 27 CARTHE drifters and 26 Surface Velocity Program (SVP) drifters were deployed: one each at every longitude in the central basin between 10°W and 30°W and the others with a lower frequency towards the edges of the basin. CARTHE drifters consist of a donut-shaped top component attached to a cross-shaped drogue and follow currents at about 0.5 m beneath the water surface. The data are acquired by Pacific Gyre. The SVP drifters deployed are specifically 5 Global Drifter Program SVPB drifters, 11 Global Drifter Program SVP drifters, 5 ESURFMAR PG upgraded SVPB drifters, and 5 Copernicus SVP-BRST drifters. These drifters consist of a surface buoy attached to a 'holey sock' drogue and are meant to follow the currents at 15 m depth. The surface buoys are equipped with a temperature sensor and in some cases a barometer. Both types of surface drifters obtain the GPS position and transmit all data to the laboratory via the iridium satellite communication system. Additionally, 5 Directional Wave Spectra Drifters (DWSD) from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography were deployed, which consist only of a surface buoy and measure the 3D wave spectrum. The respective data can be retrieved from the Lagrangian Drifter Laboratory.
