Abstract:
Ice thickness distribution was measured on Stubacher Sonnblickkees (Hohe Tauern, Austria) on March 8, 2022. The GPR data were recorded by a central frequency 80 MHz antenna at 6 scans per second. Sub-surface elevations were determined and interpolated across the glacier surface by adapting measurement profiles to glacier topography and using Digital Elevation Models from 1998 and 2017. The 2021 glacier boundary was used. Initial ice thickness measurements, with snow cover, were corrected using an average snow depth of 2.60 m. An average ice thickness of 13.5m has been recorded (excluding snow cover). Two future scenarios for 2030, 2040, and 2050 have been calculated based on elevation model differences, mean surface mass balance (2016/17 to 2020/21), and the interpolated ice thickness. For scenario B the extreme negative hydrological year 2021/2022 has also been included for mean mass balance estimations. The data set include gridded data at a resolution 1x1m of the ice thickness distribution (ed_2022_SSK.tif) as well as the two scenarios A and B for the years 2030, 2040 and 2050. The GPR profile data (.csv) include tracenumbers (tr), coordinates (lat, lon, alt), signal run-time (ns) and ice thickness (d) calculated with a propagation speed of 0,168m/ns.
