Abstract:
Alkenone biomarker unsaturation estimates (Uk'37) of sea surface temperature (SST) and alkenone concentration and mass accumulation rate (C37total) data at ~3-kyr resolution are obtained for eastern equatorial Pacific (EEP) Ocean Drilling Program Sites 138-846, 849, 850 and Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Site 321-U1338. These newly acquired alkenone biomarker data from Brown University (sample preparation and analysis methods according to Herbert et al. (2021, doi:10.5194/cp-17-1385-2021) are used to calculate gradients in SST and biological productivity in the mid Pliocene (3.0-3.6 Ma) relative to modern. Two common SST calibrations are reported here (Müller et al. (1998, doi:10.1016/S0016-7037(98)00097-0); Tierney & Tingley (2018, doi:10.1002/2017PA003201) to provide transparency when calculating the SSTs of samples approaching the alkenone saturation limit and to demonstrate how different calibrations affect (or do not affect) the SST gradients between sites. Calibrated X-ray fluorescence element oxide percents (MnO, Fe2O3, TiO2, CaCO3, Al2O3, SiO2, and BaSO4) are also included for Ocean Drilling Program Sites 138-846. The XRF data were calibrated using discrete sample analyses at the University of Rhode Island combined with log-ratio calibration equations.
