Abstract:
As part of the BMBF funded project TRAFFIC (Trophic Transfer Efficiency in the Benguela Current), water column samples were collected from the CTD/Rosette sampler during RV Meteor cruise M153 and RV Sonne cruise SO285. Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) Total Alkalinity (TA) were measured on board using the VINDTA 3C system (MARIANDA, Germany, www.marianda.com) as a combined TA and DIC titration stand. TA was determined by titration of seawater with hydrochloric acid (0.1 N HCl), while DIC was measured coulometrically. During cruise M153, DIC was measured with a cavity ringdown spectrometer (Picarro G2201-I, 1510CFIDS2047_v1.0) attached to a Liaison A0301 and an AutoMate Prep device. Both the VINDTA 3C and Picarro systems were calibrated using Certified Reference Material provided by A. Dickson (Scripps Institution of Oceanography, La Jolla, CA, USA). Nutrient samples were filtered through disposable syringe filters (0.45 µm) after sampling, filled pre-rinsed 50 ml PE bottles and kept frozen at -20°C until on-shore analysis using a continuous-flow injection system (Skalar SAN plus System) according to methods described by Grasshoff et al. (1999).
