Abstract:
X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) patterns for 34 sediment samples collected from various circum-Arctic regions are provided. Relevant metadata (sample location, depth, collect date, cruise/investigation, etc.), raw patterns, and quantitative mineralogy are provided within the submitted documentation. Using the XRD patterns, semi-quantitative mineralogy was determined using the quantitative mineralogy program RockJock. All samples were prepared following methods outlined in USGS Open-File Report 03-78 (2003). Each sample analyzed included an internal standard of powdered corundum. The internal standard ratio to sample is 1:5 (20%). All samples presented were collected during various cruises and/or obtained from personal collections. Sample collection was focused in the near-shore environment from the Barents, Kara, Laptev, East Siberian, and Chukchi Seas, as well as terrestrial (till) and channel sediments from the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, and the North Slope of Alaska. Thus, the geographic coverage is the entire circum-Arctic periphery. These data were collected to supplement the description of mineralogy of the shelf regions of the circum-Arctic. While semi-quantitative mineralogy is presented, the raw XRD patterns are provided for alternate mineralogy determination and review. The primary limitation of the provided data is limited spatial distribution. These data are presented in Myers, W.B. and D.A. Darby (submitted), A Compilation of the Silt and Clay Mineralogy from Coastal and Shelf Regions of the Arctic Ocean. Marine Geology. manuscript number: MARGO-D-22-00138.
