Abstract:
We investigate the microstructural controls of mixed mode dynamic fracture propagation in Westerly Granite and Berea Sandstone. Notched semi-circular bend samples of each rock type are loaded using a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar apparatus and crack propagation across the sample is captured using an integrated Shimadzu Hypervision HPV-2 high-speed camera system. Using digital image correlation and a multivariable linear regression based in linear elastic fracture mechanics for near crack tip displacements, we make instantaneous measurements of the mode I (opening) and mode II (shear) components to the total stress intensity field during crack initiation and growth. Our results allow evaluation of fracture propagation in rocks with micromechanical models based on observations in engineered materials.

File descriptions:
Results_Summary.xlsx contains the experimental setup and mode I and mode II stress intensity factor evolution for each experiment saved on separate worksheets.
Westerly_Granite_SG_Data.xlsx and Berea_Sandstone_SG_Data.xlsx contain the voltage time series for the tests described in the above study collected by the Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar during loading of each sample. The first worksheet in each file describes the format of each of the following datasets (contained in subsequent worksheets).
.Avi files contain the high speed camera videos of sample deformation and crack propagation during each test contained in Results_Summary.xlsx. The number in the lower right corner of each frame is the time since recording began in microseconds. Near crack tip displacements were calculated using digital image correlation for each frame in the .AVI file. The sample name corresponding to each video is indicated in the file name.
