Abstract:
Mediterranean sediments record past changes in North African aridity/humidity changes (so-called 'Green Sahara periods') on orbital timescales. These changes are reflected in the alternating accumulation of organic carbon-rich and aeolian dust enriched sediments, and negative stable oxygen isotope excursions. Here we document these changes over the past 5 million years using scanning x-ray fluorescence (XRF) of ODP Site 967 sediments, measured with a 3rd generation Avaatech XRF core scanner. Element counts were converted into element concentrations for Al [ppm], Si [ppm], S [ppm], K [ppm], Ca [ppm], Ti [ppm], Fe [ppm], Sr [ppm], Zr [ppm] and Ba [ppm], based on a multivariate log-ratio calibration. Stable carbon and oxygen isotope data of the surface-dwelling planktonic foraminifer Globigerinoides ruber (white), sensu stricto at high sampling resolution (typically every 1-3 cm downcore) were measured using a Thermo Fisher Scientific Delta Advantage mass spectrometer coupled to a Kiel IV carbonate device. A bulk sediment isothermal remanence magnetism record (“IRM900@120mT”) was measured using a 2-G Enterprises cryogenic magnetometer. The IRM900@120mT proxy represents isothermal remanence magnetism after imparting a 900 mT induction in a direct current field, followed by alternating field (AF) demagnetization in a peak 120 mT field at high sampling resolution (every 1 cm downcore).
