Comment:
The mpbvdnf_consumption_rates.csv file contains data in the following columns:
event_label - the latitude from which samples were collected. Units = degrees and decimal minutes North latitude.
season - the nominal season in which the sediment cores used in each measurement were collected.
core - the identification number for each unique sediment core used in these measurements.
light - a factor identifying whether measurements were made in the dark or the light.
rate_nox - the net NOx (nitrate + nitrite) consumption rate. Units = mmol NOx (m3 sediment)-1 h-1. Positive values indicate net consumption, negative values indicate net production. rate_o2 - the net oxygen (O2) production rate. Units = mmol O2 (m3 sediment)-1 h-1. Positive values indicate net production, negative values indicate net consumption.
Methods: Prior to rate measurements, steady state oxygen depth profiles were measured in the light in each sediment core to identify the depth of maximum net oxygen production (0.1–0.2 cm). Oxygen micro sensors and NOx micro biosensors were positioned in parallel at this depth. Site seawater containing ambient oxygen and nitrate concentrations were gravity drained through the core. Oxygen and NOx concentrations were measured for 10 minutes. Net production and consumption rates were calculated as the linear rate of change in concentration with respect to time.
