Abstract:
Multibeam data were collected during RV Polarstern cruise ANT-XXIX/3 (PS81). Multibeam data are unprocessed and may contain outliers and blunders and should not be used for grid calculations and charting projects without further editing. The dataset contains of files in HYPACK ASCII raw data format (*.HSX + *.RAW) and Teledyne/Atlas multibeam processing format (.asd). HYPACK data files can be processed using e.g. the software packages CARIS HIPS/SIPS or with the open source software package MB-System (Caress et al., MB-System: Mapping the Seafloor,http://www.mbari.org/products/research-software/mb-system/ 2021). Please note, that navigational errors during post-processing of the HYPACK files with MB system is observed using MB-system Version 5.7.5.
During transit, data acquisition was partly unsupervised, however during surveys in the research areas data acquisition was continuously monitored. In total, an area of almost 14000 km² was surveyed, mostly covering areas in the Drake Passage, Bransfield Strait and the Weddell Sea.
In total, 104x ancillary sound velocity profiles (SVP) derived from CTD casts performed during the cruise were provided to the bathymetry science team. These files are part of this dataset publication. Nevertheless, these SVP files was only applied during post-processing on the data on board, not used during data acquisition.
Among other box surveys in the Bransfield Strait and Drake Passage, the dataset contains a survey of the newly discovered "Nachtigaller Shoal" in the Weddell Sea.
