1. Fred is the total O2 required per area to oxidize all reduced compounds released by the sediment was calculated according to Steinsberger et al. (2017): Steinsberger T, Schmid M, Wüest A, Schwefel R, Wehrli B, Müller B (2017) Organic carbon mass accumulation rate regulates the flux of reduced substances from the sediments of deep lakes. Biogeosciences, 14, 3275-3285.
2. LOI and Water content values refer to a weighted mean of 3 sediment layers; 0-1, 1-3, and 3-5 cm.
3. pH value refer to mean pH value of the overlying water in the sediment cores during the sediment incubation period.

5. TC, TOC, TN and TFe in the sediment was measured once at each site in the upper 5 cm sediment layer.
