Abstract:
The dataset includes computed snow water equivalent (SWE) in mm and depth (m) of the snowpack for MOSAiC leg 1 - 3, derived from SnowMicroPen (SMP) penetration force signals. The data origins from the devices SMP49 and SMP31 that have been used during MOSAiC leg 1 - 3. In a first step, force signal measurements that are known to be incorrect or that are known to be related to device function tests, have been discarded. In a second step, the snow surface was detected in the force signal and the signal located vertically above the surface has been discarded for each measurement. The snow depth was determined by where the SMP stopped measuring, i.e. at a depth where the overload signal of 41 N (SMP49) or 40 N (SMP31), was reached, respectively. Hence, the determined depth in the file does not necessarily tell the exact position of the snow-ice interface. In a third step, density of the snowpack was computed using the statistical model from Proksch et al. (2015). The coefficients used in the model are taken from King et al. (2020) where they have been explicitly fitted for Arctic sea ice. In a last step, snowpack density was vertically averaged for each measurement and multiplied with the determined snow depth to obtain the SWE. Besides snow depth and SWE, each measurement in the csv file was assigned a timestamp (UTC), a DSHIP device operation ID, a measuring location label and geographic coordinates (DD format), as long as the SMP-internal GPS receiver was running and the antenna was receiving a GPS position signal.
