Abstract:
The dataset contains:
1) Cosmic-ray neutron (CRN) height profiles (of thermal and epithermal neutron energies) were estimated from bare and moderated detector measurements at three field site locations in the western part of Denmark. The measurements were collected in the period 2013-2015 and the field sites represent the three main land cover types in the catchment (i.e. agriculture "Voulund Farmland", forest "Gludsted Plantation" and heathland "Harrild Heathland"). The procedure to estimate thermal and epithermal neutrons from measurements of bare and moderated detectors is described in the manuscript submitted to WRR (title: "The effect of land cover on cosmic-ray neutron transport and soil moisture estimation"). One neutron height profile was measured directly using a cadmium shielded moderated neutron detector.
2) Time-series of hourly epithermal neutron intensity estimated from measurements of the bare neutron detector and/or the moderated neutron detector. For all three field sites, the data are collected at ground level (i.e. 1.5 m above the ground surface). The datasets are used to estimate soil moisture using the standard N0-calibration function and site-specific conversion functions determined based on neutron transport modeling (MCNP6). The soil moisture estimates are presented as daily moving averages.
3) A handheld TDR soil moisture meter was used to map soil moisture in the area of the CRN detectors at the three field site locations. The measurements were made over the top 20 cm of the soil profile and each map consists of 121-163 measurement points collected within an area of 300-500 meters. Soil moisture was mapped 6-8 times at the three field sites in the period March to August 2016. Here, we provide the area average of the measurement points collected for each map.
4) Time-series of soil column soil moisture (down to 22.5 cm depth) estimated from networks of 5TE capacitance sensors at the three field site locations. Data is available from 2013-2019 for Voulund Farmland and Gludsted Plantation, and from 2014-2019 at Harrild Heathland.
