Blue mussels filter water and transport material to the ocean floor. I investigate with a computer model the effect of such filtration and transport in the southern North Sea and find that up to 10% of the net annually produced biomass is filtered. This effect is not the same everywhere: near-shore, it is up to 50% and it is negligible offshore. Considering filtration is important for understanding the spatial patterns of coastal ecosystems.

The data set contains spatially resolved annual values of net primary production (NPP) for the years 2003-2013 for two scenarios from simulations that include the ecosystem model MAECS (Model for Adaptive Ecosystems in Coastal Seas), the hydrodynamic model GETM (General Estuarine Transport Model), the biochemical model OMEXDia (Ocean Margin Experiment Diagenesis) and reconstructed blue mussel distribution, all coupled through MOSSCO (Modular System for Shelves and Coasts).
Besides the reference scenario (REF), a NONE scenario evaluates the ecosystem without the presence of filter feeders.
