Analyst: Michael O'Connell
Laboratory: Palaeoenvironmental Research Unit, NUI Galway, Ireland
Data analysis completed: 1983
Sampling in field: Short monolith that included peat and underlying mineral soils.
These are additional short profiles (i.e. additional to CRG-LM) from Carrownaglogh as follows:
3 short monoliths from hollow between cultivation ridges (L1.2, L2.2, L3.2)
1 short monolith from crest (top) of a cultivation ridge (L4.1)
1 short monolith (L5) from beneath a stone wall located downslope from the main enclosure (in a separate file/event)
Pollen sampling details: Depths originally recorded in cm (cited here in m) with respect to the mineral/soil interface (as in all samples from Carrownaglogh); negative values indicate above the mineral/peat interface. Uppermost depth cited as the depth of the sample (standard PRU practice); e.g. 1 cm = 1-2 cm below the mineral/peat horizon.
Pollen preparation: Lycopodium tablets (Stockmarr) added; acetolysis, HF for basal (minerogenic) samples; mounted in glycerine.
Pollen identification and counting: Cereal-type pollen differentiated using Beug (1961) criteria (37 um as cutoff point). Size details and records of Triticum, etc. (only occasional grains of Secale) in O'Connell 1986. Pollen nomenclature generally follows Moore et al. 1991. <1 = recorded outside the pollen counts.
Other investigations (in separate files) directly connected with Carrownaglogh
6 surface pollen samples from an analogue situation, 3.3 km to SW (north of Kilgarvan, Co. Mayo)
Short pollen profile (BYC I) from Bunnyconnellan East Td (4 km to south of Carrownaglogh)
In all, 15 14C dates available for the archaeological site at Carrownaglogh (O'Connell 1986)
