Sampling in field: Short monolith that included peat and underlying mineral soils; what looked like pre-peat, small stone clearance cairn nearby 5 large pine stumps on ridge nearby (within ca. 120 m); directly on mineral ground; some on ca. 40 cm of peat; on stump on ca. 30 cm of peat was ca. 120 years old
Pollen sampling details: sampling density <= 4 cm intervals. Depths, originally recorded in cm, are here cited in m with respect to the mineral/soil interface (as in all samples from Carrownaglogh); negative values indicate above the mineral/peat interface. Uppermost depth cited as the depth of the sample (standard PRU practice); e.g. 1 cm = 1-2 cm below the mineral/peat horizon.
Pollen preparation: Lycopodium tablets (Stockmarr) added; acetolysis, HF for basal (minerogenic) samples; mounted in glycerine.
Pollen identification and counting: Cereal-type pollen differentiated using Beug (1961) criteria (37 um as cutoff point). Size details and records of Triticum, etc. (only occasional grains of Secale) in O'Connell 1986. Pollen nomenclature generally follows Moore et al. 1991. <1 = recorded outside the pollen counts.
There are 2 14C dates relating to this profile.
