357-M0071A-1R-1,010.000Metamorphic/Fault RockSerpentinized duniteSerpentinized dunite. Chromium spinel trains (grains up to 3mm; train examples at 9cm, 19cm, 26cm) and numerous carbonate veins. The chromite trains have an apparent dip to 270-40 to 55. The cc veins have apparent dips of 90-5 to 55 (plus one 270-5).The mesh texture is well developed. the serpentinization is probably complete. 0-5cm: Intrusion or vein of metagabbro. It is completely altered to chlorite rich assemblage. The veins are carbonate and possible carbonate + Fe-oxide. Some shows open spacefilling. Metagabbro is very strongly fractured but not schistose. Thin section at 9-11.5cm is serpentinised dunite, with a area of abundant oxide grains probably after chrome-spinel. Localised oxidation is associated with patches of higher birefringent?serpentine. Carbonate veins show radiating textures. Semi-quant XRD: 9-11cm - liz (63), carb (19), cchrys (11), ox (7), 92-93cm - liz (93), mgt (4), ox (3)Structures: Open fractures=2 -- 1-5 per 10cm; Veins=4 -- 10-20 per 10cm; Foliation=0 -- MassiveVeins: Shape=1 -- Straight/planar; Shape=3 --Irregular; Connectivity=2 -- Single; Connectivity=3 -- Branched; Connectivity=8 -- Parallel; Texture=1 -- Massive; Texture=4 -- Vuggy; Structure=1 -- Uniform; Structure=2 -- Banded; Structure=3 -- CompositeFractures: Morphology=IrregularMinerals: Amphibole; Carbonate; Chlorite; Hydroxides; Other; Serpentine; Spinel
357-M0071A-1R-2,010.580Metamorphic/Fault RockSerpentinized duniteSerpentinized dunite transitioning to serpentinized harzburgite. 0-29cm: MBIO - Checked - Likely serpentinized dunite. 29-67cm: Serpentinized dunite with dissimated trains of spinels (to 2mm, trains dip to 270-45 or 50) and numerous carbonate veins(as the previous unit). The serpentinization is complete, oxidation mainly concentrated close to the carbonate veins. Very strongly brecciated 1cm interval at the top of the unit (rough foliation dipping to 270-45) and it is cut by one of the cc veinwith an apparent dip of 270-45. 60-67cm: Toward to the base of the unit there is a gradual increase of the modal proportion of bastite-opx. Bastite appears transparent green in color without any remnant of cleavages. It seemes to be replaced by serpentine serp + tc. See XRD of the next section.Structures: Open fractures=1 -- <1 per 10cm; Veins=2 -- 1 - 5 per 10cm; Foliation=0 -- Massive; Foliation=1 -- Weakly foliatedVeins: Shape=1 -- Straight/planar; Shape=3 --Irregular; Connectivity=2 -- Single; Connectivity=3 -- Branched; Connectivity=8 -- Parallel; Structure=1 -- Uniform; Structure=2 -- Banded; Structure=3 -- CompositeFractures: Morphology=IrregularMinerals: Bastite; Carbonate; Hydroxides; Other; Serpentine
357-M0071A-1R-2,6721.250Metamorphic/Fault RockSerpentinized harzburgiteThe upper part of the unit is an in-situ breccia with angular fragments of harzburgites in a carbonate matrix. The upper contact is within the bastite-rich base of Unit 1. Serpentinization is complete. Opx-bastite are around 3mm, 20-30% modally. Sameobservations about bastite as unit 1 (green transparent patches). The brecciated interval at the top of the unit is highly deformed. There is not foliation throughout the full the unit. The oxidation is pronounced down to 87cm. There are carbonate veinsat 79cm into serpentinites. Late serpentine veins between 111-125cm. 75-123cm: Below the breccia the unit is very rubbly (maybe drilling induced?). 97-102cm: Gabbroic interval comprising medium grained cpx-rich gb (to 5mm) with patchy domains of withcpx-poor troctolite. Irregular contacts between the two. The upper part of this gb interval is made by an amphibole-chlorite rich domain. The contact between the gb and the harzburgite is fractured/not preserved (in the upper and lower part).Semi-quant XRD: 120-121cm - liz (91), mgt (3), plag (3), ox (3). Thin section at 88-92cm is serpentinised harzburgite with bastites and various veins, some possibly composite serpentine/carbonate.Structures: Open fractures=2 -- 1-5 per 10cm; Veins=2 -- 1 - 5 per 10cm; Foliation=0 -- Massive; Cataclastic deformation=1 -- Minor fracturingVeins: Shape=1 -- Straight/planar; Shape=3 --Irregular; Connectivity=2 -- Single; Connectivity=3 -- Branched; Connectivity=8 -- Parallel; Texture=1 -- Massive; Texture=4 -- Vuggy; Structure=1 -- Uniform; Structure=2 -- Banded; Structure=3 -- CompositeFractures: Morphology=IrregularMinerals: Amphibole; Bastite; Calcite; Chlorite; Hydroxides; Other; Serpentine
357-M0071A-1R-3,011.820Metamorphic/Fault RockSerpentinized harzburgiteSerpentinized harzburgite. Same as 1R2 bottom. Bastite about 25-30% modally, mostly 6mm. Serpentinization is complete, mesh texture, halos around bastite. The texture is mostly ribbon.Structures: Open fractures=0 -- No open fractures; Veins=0 -- No veins; Foliation=0 -- MassiveVeins: Shape=0 -- No veinsFractures: Morphology=No open fracturesMinerals: Bastite; Magnetite; Other; Serpentine
357-M0071A-2R-1,012.720RubbleSerpentinite rubbleSerpentinized harzburgite rubble. Angular pieces of 1-6cm in size. 357-M0071A-2R-1,4723.190Metamorphic/Fault RockMetagabbroMetagabbro. 47-62cm: Medium grained (cpx about 6mm) metagabbro, and poikilitic cpx to 10mm. Toward the bottom, there is a plagioclase rich layer that could be a late magmatic product. Alteration into secondary pl, chl, amph, clays. There are hairlinedark-green veins (chlorite). They have an apparent dip of 90-20. At 53cm there is a chl-filled fracture with the same apparent dip. The upper limit of the gabbro is a fractured with oxidation with a true dip of 270-45. 60-66cm: there are chl-veinsthat are maybe sheared with an apparent dip of 270-65. 64-65cm: TS - Highly chloritized gabbro. 66-86cm: MBIO - Checked - Metagabbro with clear leucocratic domains (likely troctolitic). Thin section at 64-67cm is a strongly chloritised metagabbro.Semi-quant XRD: 64-67cm - chl (95), clay (5)Structures: Open fractures=1 -- <1 per 10cm; Veins=3 -- 5-10 per 10cm; Gabbro crystal-plastic deformation=0 -- UndeformedVeins: Shape=3 --Irregular; Connectivity=2 -- Single; Connectivity=3 -- Branched; Texture=1 -- Massive; Structure=1 -- UniformFractures: Morphology=IrregularMinerals: Amphibole; Chlorite; Clay minerals; Clinopyroxene; Plagioclase
357-M0071A-2R-2,013.580Metamorphic/Fault RockMetagabbroMetagabbro with variable lithology. Px rich domains (cpx to 12mm) look like the gabbroic intervals in 71A-1R1 (96-103cm). Irregular leucocratic domains that are may be later more-evolved melts. There are irregular patches 1-2cm, maybe made byserpentinized olivine/peridotite.
