Abstract:
A cruise, aboard the R/V Moana Wave was held during April-May 1974 and investigated an area 1,400 km S.S.E. of Honolulu, Hawaii, designated as DOMES site 'A' by a panel consisting of industry, government and academic representatives managing the Deep Ocean Mining Environmental Study (DOMES) under the coordination of NOAA Environmental Research Laboratory (ERL). This investigation was conducted in order to understand the effects of commercial ferromanganese mining on the oceanic environment. Baseline studies were made on the water column and ocean floor in typical areas prior to a possible full-scale mining operations in the area of the Pacific Occean stiruated between the Clarion and Clipperton fracture zones.

Comment:
From 1983 until 1989 NOAA-NCEI compiled the NOAA-MMS Marine Minerals Geochemical Database from journal articles, technical reports and unpublished sources from other institutions. At the time it was the most extended data compilation on ferromanganese deposits world wide. Initially published in a proprietary format incompatible with present day standards it was jointly decided by AWI and NOAA to transcribe this legacy data into PANGAEA. This transfer is augmented by a careful checking of the original sources when available and the encoding of ancillary information (sample description, method of analysis...) not present in the NOAA-MMS database.
