Comment:
From 1983 until 1989 NOAA-NCEI compiled the NOAA-MMS Marine Minerals Geochemical Database from journal articles, technical reports and unpublished sources from other institutions. At the time it was the most extended data compilation on ferromanganese deposits world wide. Initially published in a proprietary format incompatible with present day standards it was jointly decided by AWI and NOAA to transcribe this legacy data into PANGAEA. This transfer is augmented by a careful checking of the original sources when available and the encoding of ancillary information (sample description, method of analysis...) not present in the NOAA-MMS database.

MPC-25F-2 Manganese nodules and manganese-encrusted rocks recovered near the west end of Horizon Guyot. Upper right are broken manganese crusts; upper center and left are encrusted sandstones; and along bottom are small manganese nodules.212Fig1_Dietz_1955.jpghdl:10013/epic.47450.d001
NTHL-10 Vertical view from above of a large nodular mass of manganese (25 inches long, 21 inches wide, and 13 inches high) was recovered several hundred miles northeast of Hawaii. It is also known as being the ""Horizon nodule""214Fig2_Dietz_1955.jpghdl:10013/epic.47450.d002
DICH-SS Sea floor photograph showing a portion of the top of Sylvania Guyot near Bikini Atoll. Rocks are probably basalt boulders thickly encrusted with manganese. Note asperities on the surface. White globigerina ooze lies between the rocks.217Fig4_Dietz_1955.jpghdl:10013/epic.47450.d003
