Modern hydrographic and sea-ice data from the sample sites were compiled from the World Ocean Atlas 2001 (http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/OC5/WOA01/pr_woa01.html). Primary productivity data were provided by the Aqua MODIS satellite for the period 2002-2005 with a spatial resolution of 4.63 km2 (http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov/index.php/).
