Comment:
a assuming average sediment porosities Ø of 0.85 (Unit 1), 0.72 (Unit 2), and 0.61 (Unit 3), respectively, according to data provided by Haeckel et al. (2008) and Reitz et al. (2011).
b assuming average pore fluid salinities of 23.07 (Unit 1); 22.27 (Unit 2), and 21.15 (Unit 3), respectively, based on pore water salinities provided by Leonov (2005). Those values were converted into pore fluid in situ densities (?pfUx) of 1021.63 (Unit 1), 1021.01 (Unit 2), and 1020.14 kg L**-1 (Unit 3) using the algorithm provided at http://www.phys.ocean.dal.ca/~kelley/seawater/density.html.
c nominal CH4 in situ concentrations (nCCH4Ux) in sediments belonging to Unit 1 (26.6 mmol L**-1) and Unit 2 (430.9 mmol L**-1) calculated from data obtained for cores DAPC 09 and 12. CH4 in situ solubilities calculated with regard to absence (sgp = 108.5 mmol L**-1; Unit 1) or presence (shpU2 = 93.9 mmol L**-1 and shpU3 = 94.7 mmol L**-1) of gas hydrates according to Duan and Mao (2006) and Tishchenko et al. (2005).
