Abstract:
Water samples were taken using a Multi Water Sampler (rosette, Cat. No. 436918) with 18 NISKIN bottles (volume of 10 L each). A SEABIRD SBE 9 CTD profiler with sensors for water temperature, salinity, oxygen, chlorophyll fluorescence, and pressure was fixed at the inner side of the Multi Water Sampler frame and connected with the rosette's motor to drive the closing of the NISKIN bottles. The rosette/CTD was mounted on a 11 mm ships wire and connected with a Deck Unit and the computer. The acquisition of data was done online during the downcast, data were acquired using the programme SEASOFT. During the upcast the NISKIN bottles were closed at the favoured depths, which were chosen after the data of the downcast had been examined. Depending on the location and the scientific questions the rosette/CTD was run in water depths between 150 m and 2700 m. On five selected stations the CTD was run together with a Sound Velocity Profiler (SVP), it was placed on the vessel's wire above the rosette/CTD. In total, 29 rosette/CTD casts at 19 different stations were run. The achieved data have been converted using the software SBE Data Processing. After the data conversion, outlying data were marked using a “wild edit”, when the dataset for one cast was too large to deal with, the amount of data was reduced to bins between 0,1 and 1 m using the “bin average”.
