Abstract:
The oxygen isotope composition of marine diatoms from hydraulic piston-cored samples of DSDP Site 480 vary widely, reflecting the great temperature variations and large isotopic changes of surface water in the Gulf of California. Nevertheless, the results can be correlated with standard oxygen isotope records for the late Quaternary based on carbonates (such as the record of core V19-29). The diatom-based results also parallel oxygen isotope data on benthic foraminifera from Site 480, thus confirming that signals of environmental changes have been retained in the diatom oxygen isotope record throughout the section. The data therefore allow us to assign an oxygen isotope stratigraphy and to define the chronology of Site 480.

Comment:
The oxygen of all samples was extracted by the fluorine method (Taylor and Epstein, 1962; doi:10.1130/0016-7606(1962)73[461:RBORIC]2.0.CO;2). Oxygen isotope analyses were made with a 3-inch, 60° deflection, double-inlet, double-collector ratio mass spectrometer (Nier, 1947, doi:10.1063/1.1740961; McKinney et al., 1950, doi:10.1063/1.1745698) manufactured by Nuclide Corporation. All data are reported in the delta notation using Standard Mean Ocean Water (SMOW) as the reference standard. The reproducibility of the oxygen isotopic values was about ±0.2‰ (1 sigma) for frustules and about ±0.1‰ (1 sigma) for quartz standards when treated in the same set of six samples. For the internal diatom standard, the reproducibility of d18Osmow values with more than thirty measurements and over a period of two years was about ±0.2‰ (1 sigma).
