Abstract:
Reasons for drilling:
1. Study of geological structure of the north-western Barents Sea shelf according to the programs of study of Arctic geology and creating geological reference points for reliable referencing of geophysical data.
2. Detailed correlation with regional geological-geophysical sections of Late Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Paleogene deposits.
Technical results:
The hole was drilled from 10.01.1985 till 14.07.1987. It has penetrated the section of 2481 m and stopped in Early Carboniferous deposits.
Scientific results:
1. Comprehensive lithologic and paleontological studies (based on different fauna groups) of drill samples from the hole have allowed to reveal lithologic features and to carry out a detailed lithologic and stratigraphic sequence of Permian, Mesozoic and Paleogene sedimentary rocks.
2. Thicknesses of the units are as followed: Early Carboniferous - 61 m, Middle-Late Triassic - 409 m, Jurassic - 151 m, joint Late Jurassic - Early Cretaceous - 93 m, Early Cretaceous - 971 m, Paleogene - 762 m, Quaternary - 34 m.
3. Complexes of sedimentary rocks based on their physical properties have been determined and their geophysical characteristics have been given.
4. Stratigraphic disconformity is supposed between Triassic and Jurassic, Hauterivian and Barremian, Cretaceous and Paleogene, Paleogene and Quaternary deposits. The Mesozoic-Cenozoic series is likely moved upon the Early Carboniferous one in north-eastern direction. Rocks of the moved series are consolidated due to catagenesis and stress.
5. Two zones of tectonic dislocations (where significant parts of the stratigraphic succession are absent) have been found. In the lower zone Triassic deposits overlay Early Carboniferous ones with tectonic contact. The upper zone comprises Jurassic and Cretaceous border layers where a part of Tithonian and Berriasian deposits has been truncated by the dislocation.
6. Two main complexes of sedimentary rocks have been defined in the section. The Permian complex is composed of siliceous-carbonate rocks with anhydrite layers. It corresponds to arid lithogenesis. The Mesozoic-Paleogene terrigenous complex corresponds to humid sedimentation.
7. Stratigraphic units, rock types, and rock complexes defined in the section are similar to ones in the adjacent areas. This has been a base for reliable correlation and for establishing the main regularities of sedimentation.
8. The hole has crossed an intrusion of gabbro-dolerites in intervals 2211-2229 and 2231-2233 m.
