2022, Gondwana ResearchThe influence of sediment diagenesis and aluminium on oxygen isotope exchange of diatom frustules
2022, Geochimica et Cosmochimica ActaCitation Excerpt :This experiment was performed in 18O-enriched NSW (18O atom fraction of 9 %, see above) to which dissolved Al was added to obtain final concentrations of 0, 150 nM and 500 nM above the background. This is in the range of observed pore-water Al concentrations (Mackin and Aller, 1984). The solutions were prepared by mixing the appropriate amounts of NSW and an Al stock solution (10032 ± 32 µg aluminium mL−1, 99.9981 % material purity, 7 % HNO3 matrix; Inorganic ventures).

2017, Journal of Marine SystemsCitation Excerpt :Alternatively, decreases of pore-water Mg2 + and K+ concentrations with depth were likely attributed to the formation of amorphous authigenic aluminosilicates (Fig. 4) (Michalopoulos and Aller, 2000, 2004). An early study on dissolved Al distributions in seawaters and sediments of the ECS also indicated the rapid formation of authigenic aluminosilicates through “reverse weathering” (Mackin and Aller, 1984). Several elements including Na+, K+, Mg2 +, dissolved Al and SiO2 can be removed by reverse weathering (Michalopoulos and Aller, 1995).
The Ti/Al molar ratio as a new proxy for tracing sediment transportation processes and its application in aeolian events and sea level change in East Asia
2013, Journal of Asian Earth SciencesCitation Excerpt :Among the terrigenous elements mentioned above Si, Fe, and K are not necessarily good indicators of sedimentary terrigenous origins. For example, Si content in marine or lacustrine sediments is often influenced by biogenic opal such as diatoms or radiolaria (Mackin and Aller, 1984). The element Fe may also reflect authigenic precipitation from Fe–Mn oxyhydroxides and pyrite under redox conditions (Mangini et al., 1990; Dymond et al., 1992).
